1. Verantwortlicher
fabmade GmbH, Steinhalde 117, 79117 Freiburg, Deutschland
Vertreten durch den Geschäftsführer Fabian Leonhardt
E-Mail: info@fabmade.de
2. Nutzung ohne Konto (lokal in deinem Browser)
Ohne Anmeldung speichert RemIslands alle Inhalte (Lernkarten, Kartenbilder, Inseln, Lernstand, Einstellungen) ausschließlich lokal in deinem Browser bzw. in der App auf deinem Gerät (localStorage und IndexedDB). Diese Daten verlassen dein Gerät nicht. Löschst du die Browserdaten, sind sie weg.
3. Server-Logs
Beim Aufruf der Seite verarbeitet unser Server (Hetzner, Rechenzentren in der EU) technisch notwendige Verbindungsdaten (IP-Adresse, Zeitpunkt, aufgerufene Ressource) in kurzlebigen Logs, um den Betrieb sicherzustellen und Angriffe abzuwehren (Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. f DSGVO).
Privacy policy
Short version: without an account, RemIslands runs entirely in your browser or on your device. Only when you sign in are your cards stored on our server (EU) for syncing. There are no advertising or tracking services.
1. Controller
fabmade GmbH, Steinhalde 117, 79117 Freiburg, Germany
Represented by its managing director Fabian Leonhardt
E-mail: info@fabmade.de
2. Using RemIslands without an account (local in your browser)
Without signing in, RemIslands stores all content (flashcards, card images, islands, learning progress, settings) exclusively in your browser or in the app on your device (localStorage and IndexedDB). This data never leaves your device. If you clear your browser data, it is gone.
3. Server logs
When you visit the site, our server (Hetzner, EU data centers) processes technically necessary connection data (IP address, time, requested resource) in short-lived logs to keep the service running and fend off attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
4. Account and sync (optional)
If you create an account, we process for contract fulfilment (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR):
- your e-mail address and a password (stored only as a cryptographic hash),
- optionally a name (if you leave it empty, the part of your e-mail address before the @),
- your cards, islands and learning progress - so your data is backed up and reaches all your devices,
- images you add to cards - they are stored on our server when syncing so they appear on your other devices,
- a session cookie for signing in, or in the iOS app an equivalent sign-in token stored on the device (technically necessary, no tracking).
The data is stored in a database on Hetzner servers (EU). Deleted cards are permanently removed after a transition period (tombstones). You can delete your account at any time directly in the app (menu → account → “Delete account…”, on desktop via the account button at the top left). We then completely delete the account and all associated data on the server (cards, card images, islands, learning progress). Alternatively, an e-mail to the address above is sufficient.
5. AI features (optional, only with your consent)
The AI features (cards from text, photo, PDF or link, blank and distractor suggestions, mnemonics, help with difficult cards) are available to signed-in users only. Before any content is sent for the first time, the app asks for your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). Without consent, nothing is sent to the AI. You can withdraw your consent at any time in the app (menu → Settings → AI help); the withdrawal applies to the future.
With your consent, we forward the following via our server to Anthropic PBC (USA) to generate suggestions:
- the text you enter,
- photos and PDF files you attach (photos are downscaled on the device first),
- the text content of web pages whose address you enter (our server fetches the page for this),
- the content of the card you request AI help for; for choice questions, the app also adds wrong answer options in the background and sends the card's question and answer for this.
We do not store photos, PDFs or web page content in the process; accepted suggestions become ordinary cards. Your e-mail address and password are not sent to Anthropic. The transfer to the USA is based on the EU standard contractual clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Do not enter sensitive personal data there.
6. iPhone app and Apple Watch app
The iPhone app contains the same application as the website; content is likewise stored locally on the device, and with an account section 4 applies. When you are signed in, the iPhone app passes the sign-in token to your paired Apple Watch via the connection between the devices. The Watch app uses it to load due cards from our server and to report your ratings back; a complication shows the number of due cards.
If you turn on the reminder, the app schedules a local notification on your device when cards become due. iOS asks for your permission for this; the notification is created on the device, no push service and no server is involved. The app only uses the camera when you take a photo yourself for an AI feature.
7. Read-aloud (text-to-speech)
Reading cards aloud uses your browser's or operating system's speech synthesis. Depending on the selected voice, your operating system may send the text to its vendor for synthesis; this is outside our control.
8. No analytics or advertising
We do not use tracking, analytics or advertising services, nor social media embeds.
9. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, as well as the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Contact us at the e-mail address above.
